ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to analyze how the Covid-19 pandemic contributed to the increase in the number of people in situations of vulnerability and, consequently, to the increase of social and economic inequalities that, historically, have thriven in Brazil. Therefore, it starts with an analytical reconstruction of the concepts of necropolitics and democratic legitimacy, proposed by Achille Mbembe and Pierre Rosanvallon, respectively. Thus, it seeks to show, preliminarily, how public policies and government management during the crisis contributed to the worsening of the post-pandemic chaotic scenario, with the resulting ratification and, even, resurgence of the invisibility of vulnerable groups, through the implementation of increasingly indifferent policies and, in some cases, refractory to the desires and needs of these groups, which will be considered mainly from the perspective of Achille Mbembe's necropolitics. Then, within the scope of this analysis, the forms of legitimacy (impartiality, proximity and reflexivity). Through this sophisticated conception of the democratic experience, viewed as irreducible to its electoral dimension (delegation democracy), an attempt will be made to explain the extent to which the increased vulnerability of various social groups in the context of the pandemic can be considered as an expression of greater democratic deficit in Brazil. © 2023: Author(s).

ABSTRACT

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a massive migration from working in the office to working from home (WFH) and the software development teams had to adapt to the new reality. This paper focused on how the agile teams dealt with the challenges of WFH and how this affected the software development process. To capture the perceptions of the agile teams, we carried out a survey that investigated the following aspects of WFH: work routine, collaboration, communication, productivity, transparency, challenges, and the software development process itself. The survey received 127 valid responses from agile team members and the results revealed that i) most of the members of agile teams considered the work continued as usual regardless of the place (office or remote);ii) 80% of members of agile teams mentioned an increase in productivity during WFH;iii) 85% of participants are using Scrum as management strategy;iv) communication between teams members during the remote working model was perceived as more effective;v) Microsoft Teams and Google Meets were the most used interactions tools by members of agile teams. ABSTRACT

The objective of the paper is to link the philosophical debate on cosmopolitanism developed between Jurgen Habermas, Thomas Pogge and Cristina Lafont with the current process of transformation of the European Union that is generated from the crisis of COVID 19. We analysed the tensions between the national identities and human rights;the moral legitimacy of global and continental taxes is debated;the tensions between state and supra-state sovereignty are questioned, and, finally, the discussion about the limits that define what is fair and the justice in the so-called: "New Generation of the EU".

ABSTRACT

Introduction: COVID-19 notification has been growing continuously in Brazil and the study of all related aspects is necessary. Objective: To determine the incidence rate of coronavirus, analyze the spatial autocorrelation of reported cases and determine the correlation between the incidence of the disease and sociodemographic variables in the state of Paraiba, in 2020. Method: An observational, ecological research was carried out and data were obtained from notifications from cities in Paraiba to the Coronavirus Panel. The outcome variable was the disease incidence rate, and the explanatory variables referred to sociodemographic data, testing the hypotheses using Spearman's correlation. Spatial autocorrelation was verified using Moran's I and Geary's C statistic, using choropleth maps, by means of the R software, at a significance level of 5%. Results: Increasing values of incidence rates were observed as the months progressed. There was a statistical correlation for population density, income, and Municipal Human Development Index in most months. In addition, the Alto-Alto pattern was observed in the state capital at the beginning of the pandemic and, soon after, a migration of this spatial pattern to the interior cities. Conclusions: It was observed, therefore, that the high incidence rates and its spatial behavior negatively impact people's lives and signal the need for a more intense intervention of governmental policies.

ABSTRACT

The pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus (2019) highlighted the educational inequalities in the country, creating challenges for education professionals, students and families. This new atmosphere was reflected in the teaching practice and in the daily practice of the countless schools in the country, which, with the intense advance of the disease, soon tried to look for means and methods to ensure minimal contact with students. This scenario of fragility triggered many concerns about the school-student relationship. Before that, some questions arose: What do the students say ? How are you receiving the content ? How do you access online classes ? Once the problem is situated, this article intends to present some methodologies used with elementary school students and high school students, which aimed to create a proximity between the school, teacher and student. It is, therefore, reflections on a pedagogy of sensibilities, which, in addition to the official contents present in the curriculum, considers the experiences of students.

ABSTRACT

This article's objective is to present reflections in the context of History Teaching in dialogue with scenarios experienced in the exercise of teaching, in the discipline of History, in a public school in the state of Sao Paulo, in the context of the pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2, in remote teaching modality. To do so, we anchored urselves in reports collected during classes and bibliographic studies, in the field of curriculum studies and History teaching. This teaching practice made possible problematizations between the content offered in line with the official guidelines and its unfolding amongst the students. Faced with the relationship between the official curriculum and students, the central question of this work emerged: to discuss the place of the Other and the Difference in the Sao Paulo curriculum during the pandemic. In the end, these implications direct us to reflect on how a problematized education alters not only the teaching practices, but also the student's profiles, reflecting in a democratic society.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 is an infectious disease with respiratory transmission caused by the new coronavirus. Due to the high viral transmissibility, sports activities were severely impacted all over the world and in Brazil football was paralyzed for about four months. The objective of this study was to identify the activities with the highest risk of Covid-19 transmission in a professional soccer club in Rio de Janeiro based on a cross-sectional study with a semi-quantitative emphasis. The results showed that physical training showed a greater number of touches (105) with a high prevalence of hand on the ball (94%). The antibody search found that 24,2% tested positive for IgG during the study. During the training phase, no cases of SARS-CoV-2 transmission between players and staff were identified. It is believed that biosafety measures and the individual and collective commitment of everyone to social isolation and hygiene measures are an important strategy for the viability of sports activities.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have a higher risk for infection caused by the new coronavirus (COVID-19). The COVID-19 pandemic and social isolation contributed to the adaptation to new health promotion and education tools, including virtual methods. The aim of this study is to analyze the guidelines made through the Renal Health profile on Instagram during the COVID-19 pandemic to patients with CKD. Method(s): This is a quantitative, descriptive study, with the analysis of posts, comments and likes, carried out on the Renal Health (@renal_health) Instagram profile, an educational project based in Brazil, initiated as part of an ISN Clinical Research Program Project, which addresses kidney health, from February 2020 to May 2022, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Result(s): Currently, the Renal Health Instagram profile (https://www.instagram.com/renal_health/) has 1333 publications and more than 10,000 followers. It is a profile administered by a nurse, a nephrologist and a team of public health researchers at the University of Fortaleza, Brazil. A total of 106 posts about COVID-19 were analyzed, covering news about the pandemic, guidelines on prevention and vaccination, association between COVID-19, CKD and transplantation, among others. There were 13,815 likes and 1,068 comments. The most liked post (n = 696) was a photo with a news item: "InCor discharges Covid patient with transplanted lung". Among the comments, it was possible to observe several compliments, reports of patients with CKD and kidney transplants, as well as doubts, which were answered by the team that maintains the profile. The most commented post was also a news item: "Hospital denies transplant to unvaccinated patients", with 146 comments. Conclusion(s): The general population's interest in the association between COVID-19 and kidney disease is evident. It is important to point out the role of the profile as an online educational tool that helps in clarifying doubts about the new coronavirus, in addition to acting as an easy and practical way to acquire knowledge from reliable sources, regarding the risks that patients with kidney diseases have when contracting the virus, as well as many other relevant subjects, always emphasizing the relevance of preventive measures, including vaccination. From the study, it is noticeable that, during the pandemic, there were a large number of clarified doubts, as well as positive feedbacks about the platform. Therefore, the Renal Health profile proved to be an important health education mechanism during the pandemic. No conflict of interestCopyright © 2023

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Endothelial dysfunction and coagulopathy have been reported as the basis of severe Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) associated with COVID-19. Endothelial biomarkers can detect kidney damage early and allow the adoption of efficient measures to prevent the progression of the disease and its complications. This finding could facilitate the follow-up of patients at higher risk, as well as provide early diagnosis strategies and promote the rational use of resources. The aim of this study is to assess the role of vascular biomarkers to predict the need for hemodialysis in critically ill patients with COVID-19. Method(s): This is a prospective study with 58 patients critically ill due to COVID-19 infection admitted to a tertiary hospital in Fortaleza, Northeast Brazil, from 2020 to 2021. General laboratory tests and vascular biomarkers such as VCAM-1, Syndecan-1, ACE-2, ICAM-1, Angiopoietin-1 and Angiopoietin-2 were quantified on admission to the intensive care unit (ICU). Result(s): There was a 40% mortality rate. VCAM and the Ang-2/Ang-1 ratio at ICU admission were associated with the need for hemodialysis. Vascular biomarkers (VCAM-1, Syndecan-1, angiopoietin-2/anogiopoietin-1 ratio) and thrombocytopenia were predictors of dialysis, and their cutoff values were useful to stratify patients with worse prognosis in the Kaplan-Meier analysis. In the cox multivariate regression analysis with models adjusted according to the presence or absence of platelets, VCAM-1 [O.R. 1.13 (95% CI: 1.01 - 1.27);p=0.034] was an independent predictor of dialysis in all models, and the Ang-2/Ang-1 ratio [O.R. 4.87 (95% C.I.: 1.732 - 13.719);p=0.003] was associated with the need for dialysis in the model without platelet input. Conclusion(s): Vascular biomarkers, mainly VCAM-1 and Ang-2/Ang-1 ratio, and coagulation disorders showed important predictive value for the need for hemodialysis in critically ill patients with COVID-19. ABSTRACT

Air pollution has become one of the factors that most affect the quality of life, human health, and the environment. Gaseous pollutants from motor vehicles have a significantly harmful effect on air quality in the Metropolitan Area of São Paulo (MASP)—Brazil. Motor vehicles emit large amounts of particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the last three acting as the main tropospheric ozone (O3) precursors. In this study, we evaluated the effects of these pollutants on air quality in the MASP during the partial lockdown that was imposed to ensure the social distancing necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. We compared the monthly data for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and CO, SO2, and BC from MERRA-2 for the period between April and May 2020 (during the pandemic) with the average for the same period for the (pre-pandemic) years 2017 to 2019 in the southeast region of Brazil. The meteorological and pollutant concentration data from the CETESB air quality monitoring stations for the MASP were compared with the diurnal cycle of three previous years, with regard to the monthly averages of April and May (2017, 2018, and 2019) and the same period in 2020, when the partial lockdown was first imposed in southeast Brazil. Our findings showed that there was a decrease in NO2 concentrations ranging from 10% to more than 60% in the MASP and the Metropolitan Area of Rio de Janeiro (MARJ), whereas in the Metropolitan Area of Belo Horizonte and Vitoria (MABH and MAV, respectively), there was a reduction of around 10%. In the case of the concentrations of CO and BC from MERRA-2, there was a considerable decrease (approx. 10%) during the period of partial lockdown caused by COVID-19 throughout almost the entire state of São Paulo, particularly in the region bordering the state of Rio de Janeiro. The concentration of SO2 from MERRA-2 was 5 to 10% lower in the MASP and MARJ and the west of the MABH, and there was a decrease of 30 to 50% on the border between the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, while in the MAV region, there was an increase in pollutant levels, as this region was not significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Sharp reductions in the average hourly concentrations of CO (38.8%), NO (44.9%), NO2 (38.7%), and PM2.5 (6%) were noted at the CETESB air quality monitoring stations in the MASP during the partial lockdown in 2020 compared with the hourly average rate in the pre-pandemic period. In contrast, there was an increase of approximately 16.0% in O3 concentrations in urban areas that are seriously affected by vehicular emissions, which is probably related to a decrease in NOx. © 2023 by the authors.

ABSTRACT

Using the resource-based view, we examine the roles of international and digital orientations as determinants of the digitalization and the early internationalization strategies of international new ventures (INVs). We also examine the effect of implementing those strategies on the innovation performance of INVs during the COVID-19 pandemic. We tested this conceptual framework by using structural equation modeling (AMOS) on a database of 213 INVs. The results indicate that international orientation is a fundamental determinant of both strategies, while digital orientation only fosters a digitalization strategy. Moreover, both strategies were critical to increase innovation performance during the pandemic. This study expands the literature in the field of international entrepreneurship in three different ways: i) it highlights the relevance of innovation performance for INVs during the pandemic;ii) it underlines the relevance of both the early internationalization and the digitization strategies to promote innovation performance;and iii) it reinforces the importance of international and digital orientations as critical resources for defining strategy. © 2023 Elsevier Inc.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 pathology is characterized by a variety of symptoms, from respiratory to cardiac and even neuronal affections. However, from all of these manifestations, lungs' affection remains a focus of attention due to being considered as the main cause of death. Respiratory failure is treated using different strategies, but a very common practice is to provide respiratory support through artificial ventilation to patients. Unfortunately, due to the shortage of devices capable to offer such functionality, many patients are left unattended given that public healthcare systems' resources are not enough - the Bolivian healthcare system was not the exception. This paper reports the approach followed to develop MAMBU which stands for Mechatronic Ambulatory Medical Breathing Unit, an automation system for AMBU-based ventilation designed to face the shortage of ventilation devices in Bolivia. A MAMBU device can be manufactured and assembled in a short amount of time, with a low cost and easy transportation. Furthermore, it includes control schemes to manage the respiratory frequency, I:E ratio, PEEP, and FiO2. The device was validated through instrumental testing and in-vivo procedures following Bolivian current regulations. The results obtained show that the device is safe for human usage as well as relatively reliable (around 7% of error). © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Depression is a serious disease that affects the general population, epidemiological studies estimate that the prevalence of depression throughout life in Brazil is around 15.5%. The factors that trigger the onset of depression include social, psychological, biological and also specific external factors such as stressful events, loneliness, alcohol and drug consumption, chronic diseases and giving birth (postpartum depression). The objective of the present research was to carry out a literature review on the main medicinal plants with antidepressant action. Anxiety has become one of the main problems of today, being intensified by the pandemic caused by the coronavirus, where it was found that during the peak of the pandemic where confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Brazil rose from 45,757 to 330,890, and deaths, from 2,906 to 21,048, the feeling of sadness/depression reached 40% of Brazilian adults. Symptoms of depression can be alleviated when synaptic availability of monoamines is increased, and this increase can occur through decreased metabolization of these neurotransmitters. In this sense, the use of antidepressants that make monoamines available in the synaptic cleft is sought through pharmacotherapy. The choice of drug is based on symptoms of depression and good response to a particular class of antidepressants. In February 2009, the Ministry of Health launched the National List of Medicinal Plants of Interest to the SUS (RENISUS), containing 71 plant species that are distributed in natura form in basic health units (UBS). Of these, only three species have antidepressant and anxiolytic effects proven in the literature, being Matricharia chamomilla, Erytrinum mulungu and Passiflora incarnata, which are also part of RENISUS. In addition to these, other species such as Melissa officinalis, Lippia alba, Valeriana officinalis and Piper methysticum are used by the population to treat anxiety, insomnia and depression, thus suggesting that these species are included in RENISUS.

ABSTRACT

Eugenia pyriformis Cambess (Myrtaceae), popularly known as uvaia. In its fruits, phenolic compounds with antioxidant action are found and in the leaves, high levels of flavonoids and hydrolyzed tannins were detected, which proved to be an inhibitor of the 2019 protease - nCoV and SARS-CoV. In this sense, the objective of this study was to obtain the crude extract of the leaves, the analysis of the chemical composition and the possibility of antiviral action against SARS COV-2. The crude extract (EB) was obtained from the dried leaves of E. pyriformis, by the dynamic maceration technique with solvent exhaustion (ethanol 90 degrees GL) and concentrated in a rotary evaporator. Six grams of EB were fractionated in column chromatography, and eluted with hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and methanol, the fractions were concentrated on a rotary evaporator (Tecnal TE-210). EB and fractions were identified by high performance liquid chromatography using high resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI/qTOF). The chemical identification of the crude extract and fractions of E. pyriformis leaves evidenced the presence of phenolic compounds, highlighting phenolic acids, flavonoids and tannins. In addition, a bibliographic survey was carried out on the probable antiviral action of phenolic compounds and tannins present in uvaia leaves. The results showed that the flavonoids quercetin and kaempferol have antiviral action when they bind to the envelope glycoprotein or viral capsid, interfering with the binding and penetration of the virus into the cell. This result places E. pyriformis leaves in the list of plants with antiviral action.

ABSTRACT

A healthy 32-years-old man was admitted in emergency department after cardiac arrest at home. He had complaints of fatigue and general malaise after Pfizer-BioNTech Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) first dose vaccine 48 hours earlier. Upon hospital admission, patient scored 3 points in Glasgow Coma Scale. Electrocardiogram showed atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response and a point-of-care ultrasound demonstrated severe left ventricular dysfunction with global hypokinesia. Blood tests were remarkable for elevation of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin-T and inflammatory parameters, normal platelet and fibrinogen levels and slightly increased D-dimer. A computed tomography (CT) with angiography of the cerebral arteries revealed acute ischemic posterior circulation stroke with total occlusion of the basilar artery and partial occlusion of the left vertebral artery. Life-saving systemic thrombolysis was performed but there was no clinical benefit. Pulmonary embolism was excluded. Transesophageal echocardiography showed severe left ventricular dysfunction (LVEF 30%), global hypokinesia and an apical thrombus with no other significant abnormalities. De novo multiple ischemic injuries were shown in 24h control brain CT. Once autoimmunity, thrombophilia study, PCR and serologic tests for viral infections including SARS-CoV-2 were negative, cardioembolic stroke following post-vaccinal myocarditis was suspected. Brain stem death was verified 72h later and a post-mortem endomyocardial biopsy was performed, although no signal of myocarditis was found. COVID-19 mRNA vaccination is associated with increased risk of myocarditis. We report the first known case of cardioembolic stroke and probable myocarditis after BNT162b2 first dose. This highlights that, although rare and with a predominantly favorable course, vaccine-related myocarditis can have life-threatening complications. (Figure Presented).
